Town Hall Meetings on the Financial Choice Act

Town Hall Meetings: Financial CHOICE Act

Town Hall Meetings on the Financial Choice Act

Town Hall Meetings on the Financial Choice Act

Town Hall Meetings on the Financial Choice Act are right now the most urgent defense line to protect shareholder rights. As you are aware, the Financial CHOICE Act (which threatens to gut the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the Shareholder Proposal Rule) has been referred to the full House of Representatives for a vote as early as next week.  Congressional Representatives are on recess, and are expected to hold town halls or office hours this week. Clearly, time is of the essence. Background:

NorthStar Asset Management, As You Sow, and Sanford Lewis have been working with the grassroots organization Indivisible, which has recommended that we find passionate constituents in key districts to actually show up at town hall meetings and ask their Congressperson for a commitment to vote against the Financial CHOICE Act and any changes to the Shareholder Proposal Rule. We implore you to learn your voting district and Congressperson, and identify which town hall meeting you (or a client) can attend to speak out against this act.

To help you (or clients) do this, we are providing the below resources:

  1. Town hall meetings are being posted with short notice.  I have committed to sending regular updates to all interested parties regarding new town hall meetings in key districts. The first set of meetings is listed at the bottom of this email. As information is changing rapidly, please confirm meeting date and registration requirements on your representative’s website.
  2. In collaboration with Sanford Lewis and As You Sow, NorthStar Asset Management, Inc. has put together a “cheat sheet” for financial advisors/pension fund representatives that will attend town hall meetings, including a sample script. I would add, you don’t have to be a financial advisor or financial professional, as long as you are concerned about the rights of shareholders.
